Martin has eclectic musical taste drawing from his varied past……you can find him anywhere enjoying the music -from the dance floor of Hi in Ibiza to the mosh pit at a Foo Fighters stadium gig Having first played vinyl in one of Sunderlands largest clubs (The Blue Monkey) in the 80’s, Chicago House gave him his lifelong love of all things house, leading to playing venues & events all over North East England. A serious knee injury which finished his rugby career & a relationship break up led to an early season solo rehab holiday in Ibiza….where he was asked to stay & help by Club 18-30 to help…..which of course he did….. the details & names have been withheld to protect the innocent !!! Meeting his future wife at the very end of that season, he immediately on return to UK relocated just south of London to be with her, built the non music career, had 3 children & due to the continued knee damage never reentered the DJ booth Martin never returned to Ibiza from that summer in 1993 until 2010, no social media, people relocating all over the world etc meant connections just drifted The return to Ibiza was prompted by a series of events you couldn’t predict in 2007, moving the family to Durham from the south, serious invasive brain surgery to remove something nasty from in there (they said they did find some brain too!!) & divorce,  mixed with the start of Facebook (my metal skull doesn’t set off airport scanners… everybody asks!!) Previous Ibiza connections started reconnecting, Encouraging a return, & Martins 2 youngest kids begged him to take them to show them the island & meet his friends That trip reconnected Martins love of the island, which started a cycle of 3 or 4 visits a year either with the children, with a girlfriend or solo trips, these holidays have evolved to elongated summer stays Although Martin has kept his hand in at home with his decks, he was coaxed out of 28 years of retirement in summer 2021, playing at the famous Rock Bar in Ibiza town Marina & a live streamed event from the amazing Beach Star Hotel back to back with Kavita (the knee suffered for days after both times!!) Martin is honoured to join the Beach Radio team & excited by the growth we will see in 2022….. watch this space for regular “House of Halo” mixes & shows

Sheffield lawyer turned DJ set to perform at The Leadmill after ‘incredible’ journey through lockdown

A Sheffield lawyer turned DJ who accidentally started her journey into the music industry during lockdown is set to entertain a Leadmill crowd this weekend.

After lockdown forced her to cancel the big 50th birthday party she had planned, mum-of-two Kavita Varu decided she was going to have to get a bit creative in figuring out a way to celebrate with family and friends.
And so Kavita dusted off the DJ decks she had bought herself months earlier and set about creating the perfect party playlist.
She extended an open invitation to family and friends to join her virtually in her living room at 8 pm on her birthday, for her debut DJ spot and to her disbelief, 90 people joined the stream to watch her.
The experience inspired Kavita, who is a lawyer by trade, to pursue DJing even further, and she now live streams on Youtube every Friday on her channel called DJ Kavita.
In July, she travelled to the party island of Ibiza to play at the famous Rocks Bar Ibiza in the Old town and also at the Beach Star Hotel, San Antonio, owned by Jenny Frost – formerly of Atomic Kitten.
Kavita said: “I never knew in my wildest dreams that my 50th birthday party, which started accidentally on Facebook, would lead to such great things.”
“It has been an incredible journey, an exponential learning curve. There are so many angles to this journey; technical, musical, understanding the people in the industry.”
She added: “I’m an inspiration to people who are going through a midlife crisis, mental health, or anybody who has got a dream and wants to achieve something.
“My advice to people is go for it. Apply 100 per cent commitment and do it with passion. Listen to your gut instincts.”
This coming Bank Holiday Sunday, Kavita has her biggest gig yet as she prepares to spin the decks at Sheffield’s legendary Leadmill venue for the Sheffield Clubbers Reunion event.
Clubbers will take a trip down memory lane as DJs play club music they enjoyed from the 90s and 00s over two rooms.
Kavita will DJ alongside Martin Cheggars Wright, who was a resident DJ at both Kingdom in Barkers Pool and Pulse at Valley Centertainment and is the organiser and founder of Sheffield Clubbers Reunion.
Speaking about playing at the Leadmill, Kavita said: “I'm absolutely thrilled. I am so ready for this and can’t wait to interact with the audience at a big venue.
“We've got a laser show, big video screens, dancers, fire acts; it’s going to be fantastic.”
